Watching the Show
A Khampa man relaxes on the grass taking in the soft afternoon warmth of summer. He quietly watches the dancers who celebrate this year's horse festival.
Each summer Tibetans gather together for the annual horse
festival. The festival usually lasts for 4-5 days and includes many
festivities, games, trick riding, dancers, folk tales and of course a race
to find the fastest horse in the valley.
The winner, along with the prestige
of having the fastest horse around, receives some ornate embroidered
cloth
and prize money.

Afternoon Tea
The earthen stove boils water for never-ending tea. Life in a black tent is simple with few luxuries. All contents are to be packed onto yaks andtakento greener pastures with the changing seasons.
Traditionally Tibetans are anomadic peoples. They must travel to find enough food for their yaks,sheepand goats, which provide virtually everything that they need to, sustain
life, food, clothing and shelter. The tent is made from woven yak hair and the fuel for cooking is made from dried yak dung. Nothing is wasted in this land.

Heavenly Palms
A very calm body of water reflects the velvety green landscape near Tachika
(Si Qu), Sichuan China, in the Kham region of Easter Tibet.
The image of two hands pressed together in prayer didn't occur to me at the time I was taking this photo.
I was merely mesmerized by the mirror like Quality Of the lake.

Birds' Eye View
Looking down on the valley below (4200m) at the Mipham monastery built 400 years ago, I felt as if I would be taken by the wind. I was threehours above this ancient spot, for that's as long as it took me to reach thehighest point directly above.
(Still recovering from a recently broken foot, this was no easy task... some goats were my inspiration.)
Prayer Flagsattached to large posts extend all the way down to the monastery groundsbelow and north across the cravass to the next mountain. It truly amazes me, the lengths a Tibetan will go to show their devotion.

Soaring Shadow
An eagle soars over the inner courtyard casting an afternoon shadow on theprayer flags of the Bebung Monastery situated in the mountain valleysanhour west of Dege(rhymes with reggae) in eastern Tibet.

Walkabout
Tibetan lamas parade around Mipham Monastery, located in the Khamregion of Eastern Tibet, in their colorful robes on a bright summer afternoon
after Studying inside the newly rebuilt, but dimly lit interior. They study
Buddhist scripture twice daily under the gaze of the thousand eyes, thousand
armed Buddha of Compassion.
